Mark GibsonHi Folks, I hope everyone is feeling well rested after the Christmas/New year break. Now it’s time to head back to the practice pads and get the hands moving again. I thought I’d start the new year with a few simple fluency exercises. The first installment comes from the amazing Drummerworld site that I’ve written about previously, in particular from Joe Morello.
“Living Legend” is a title thrown about far too often these days but one of the genuine qualifiers for this title is Joe Morello. Most people would have heard Joe on Dave Brubeck’s classic song “Take Five“. Written by Paul Desmond and Joe Morello, it is a brilliant jazz piece from the 1960’s in 5/4 time and features a very tasty drum solo. Joe is still a very active teacher of the drums and in this clip he demonstrates a few simple snare drum exercise to promote fluency and speed. It looks simple enough but watch the short video to see how it can be performed when you’ve put some work into it. Check it out along with all of the other great resources at drummerworld.
Joe Morello on drummerworldIf any of you guys have a favourite exercise to improve fluency, then let me know in the comments and I’ll publish the good ones here. See you next time.
