Mark GibsonHere is a simple [tag]drum lesson[/tag] you can use to improve your co-ordination and independence. Have a look at the exercise below. It is a simple 16th note roll starting at the [tag]snare drum[/tag] and going around the toms to the floor tom then coming back around the toms to finish at the snare again. It seems pretty simple doesn’t it? Give it a try though and you’ll soon see the difficulty. The problem lies in the second bar, coming back from the floor tom to the snare. The sticking makes it very hard, especially at anything above a very slow pace. Your hands get all crossed up going from drum to drum.

What you need to do to make it work is to swap hands somehow so that in the second bar each new drum starts on your left hand. Okay Mark, I hear you ask, how do I swap hands. Well, this is where all that work you’ve put into your double stroke rolls and paradiddles comes in handy. Have a look at the sticking in the exericise below. Notice that when we get to the floor tom in the first bar, the sticking is now RLRR. This puts you onto your left hand to start thr roll back toward the snare. The same applies when we get back to the snare at the end of the second bar. The sticking becomes LRLL which puts you back onto your right hand to go around again.

This is where the name “Turnaround” comes in. This change of sticking allows you to “turnaround” and come back again indefinately. It’s a great exercise to build up speed & endurance, and to get you moving around the [tag]drum kit[/tag], as you can do it continuously. It also looks great as part of a solo!Take it really slow to start with as you might find it strange to be doing rolls off you left hand. Once you can play it smoothly increase the tempo a bit and see how you go. It doesn’t take long to work up a sweat with this exercise! In part 2 we will look at adding some bass drum to it. Stay tuned.
