Speedlinking - Working on the weak hand and building speed
At the start of each new teaching year I like to take all my drum students through some of their basics again, just to get over the Christmas break. This year we’ve been concentrating on building up their “weak side”. The left side if you’re right handed and vice versa. Here is a great article I found this week over at tigerbill.com called Workin the weak hand.
The next link is to some great advice for building snare drum speed by Steve Dow.
Here is an extract:
“Eventually the next day came, and it was my turn to see how fast I could play. I did my thing and was completely shocked when I ended up winning with a “score” of 905 singles in 60-seconds. I was now in the final elimination round to be held 3-weeks later at the Berklee College of Music in Boston!”
The article is called Tips and Exercises for Drumming Fast is is a great read.
Last but not least is a great set of exercises and stretches for drummers. Remember folks, the drum set is a very physical instrument and you can get injuries and muscle soreness quite easily. This will eventually have a negative imapct on your playing. Developing a simple stretching routine will help you greatly.
